Note	Desc. Sotheby, n. 180: Description: exceptionally rare, of the rules and statutes of the Portuguese branch of the Military Order of Santiago. The Order was founded in 1161, inspired by the legend of the miraculous appearance of St. James in the ranks of the army of Aragon during the battle of Clavigio, where King Ramiro I defeated the Moors. This is the first book printed at Setubal, a site that was probably chosen for its proximity to Palmella, the seat of the Order of Santiago and residence of its last independent Master, Dom Jorge, Duke of Coimbra. Herman de Kempis, a German-born and -trained printer, who worked in Portugal from 1509 to 1518, also printed at Lisbon and Almeirim. The Regra da ordem de Sanctiaguo is the earliest known book from his press and the "most beautiful and perfect of all the works he issued" (Manuel). The woodcuts comprise a stirring full-page cut of St. James on horseback trampling two defeated Moors; a similar smaller scene of a mounted knight of the Order subjugating an enemy; two impressions of a banner-block with variant coloring schemes; and the arms of the Order. Gothic type. Double column, 30 lines + headline.
