| Note | ISTC: Acquired from the Broxbourne Library (AE.R.893), 1978, not in BMC. BL Cat.: 104 leaves, the last blank. Sig. a-n8. 35, 36 lines to a page. With woodcuts. Inserted between leaf a1 and leaf a2 is another leaf, numbered “ij” and of different paper, with woodcuts on recto and verso. Without the blank leaf. Faulhaber: Verosímilmente es el ejemplar ofrecido por Kraus en 1950 en $3200, que también tenía la h. adicional entre la portada y a ij. Kraus lo describe así: “Brown crushed morocco, gilt lettered back with five raised bands, g.e., by Sangorski 7 Sutcliffe. … Our copy is complete and in a flawless unwashed state. It contains an extra leaf (with foliation ij), inserted between the title-page and leaf a ij. On its recto this leaf shows a large woodcut coat of arms of the Catholic kings within a circular frame bearing their titles as perpetual administrators of the Order of Santiago. On the back follows an impressive full-page cut of monumental beauty, printed in black and red. It represents St. James, the patron saint of the order, as an armored knight on horseback triumphantly hewing down three moors. These cuts seem not go be mentioned anywhere and it could not be established whether the were made for special copies of the edition.” |
